The fallen warrior of Öndheim

The pain is a fading memory, my wounds are gone. A gentle breeze dances with the grass and the blue little flowers around my feet. Öndheim always has these little flowers everywhere, it seems odd to see them growing between the stones, amidst all this death.

The portal shimmers in the twilight, there’s a warmth in its glow. The wights approach me slowly, solemn and bright. They have been my guides and companions while my soul rested in Öndheim with the rest of the fallen, but now it is time. My last journey awaits.

I’ve heard your kind telling the most outlandish stories about the merfolk, stories filled with mystery and allure, danger and deceit. I enjoy listening to your old tales, and I wonder how much your ancestors knew… and how. Perhaps the bravest among you dove somewhat too deep one day while looking for pearls, and caught a glimpse of the sacred temples and towers that we conceal under the waves.

On some quiet nights, when your world is asleep and there’s no sound but the soft whisper of the sea foam caressing the shores, our divine songs ripple through the surface and can be heard, dancing with the wind, toying with the leaves of the trees, gently fading until all is silent again.

Into the Fairelands

“Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe“

We’ve waited with our eyes full of dreams and memories, we’ve counted the minutes and the seconds, and now it’s time: the portals are open once again and the magic from the Fairelands calls for us, the Fantasy Faire 2024 has begun.

The Faire means many different things for us. For some, it’s all about the fun, meeting fellow “geeks” while playing the ultimate cosplay with our avatars, the parties, the games, the shopping. For others, it’s a way to share our creativity, from the incredibly talented builders who create all these worlds for us to enjoy, the amazing photographers who document the beauty of the lands, the merchants who put effort and love into their creations year by year, to the performers and everyone else who give life to this wonderful dream to support the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world without cancer.

We are all here to Relay For Life. The Faire unites us in an effort to contribute to this fight, it unites us in our shared experiences, as we transform the struggles and the pain into beauty and joy. We relay with love, we relay with hope, we relay in the memory of the ones we’ve lost, and for the scars of the ones who survived.

When I relay, I think of the brother who lost his battle so many years ago, his youth taken away and our broken hearts. But I also relay in the name of the sister who survived and is still my dearest friend, and how grateful I am to know that we’re still there, giving each other light. I relay with my husband, who also survived a few years ago and is still the love of my life, my partner, lover, and accomplice, and we relay for so many others in so many other lives, whoever you are. We will never forget you.

The air is rancid with death and rubble dust. It’s been many years since the last time human steps hurried along these roads, now broken and silent. There are no more voices bartering among the ruins of what was the market, no more pigeons pecking at bread crumbs outside of the empty shell that was a bakery, no more children chasing a dog or singing a nursery rhyme on their way from the shattered remains of a school. There are no more dogs chasing birds, no more birds, no more butterflies.

Haunting the walks of men

At least you have the moonlight to somewhat guide your steps as you hurry through the silent forest. You were warned not to take that little pathway, but you always know better, do you not? Old wives’ tales, you chuckled, but you did secure your dagger tight and you told yourself it would help in case you found wild animals on your way. You lost the pathway, circled back a few times, but you’re still reasonably certain that you can find the town soon. There’s a clearing ahead, it must be the right direction. You hear a soft crack behind you, like a dry branch being stepped on. All of a sudden, you feel haunted, hunted, prey. You are about to find out the truth of the old wives’ tales.

Just a few more swipes, I say to myself, as the hours escape through my headphones and around my insomniac doomscrolling silence. Oh look, death, destruction, and then soft kitties cuddling and purring, another delicious recipe that I will never cook, one more historical factoid about the Tower of London, more death and despair, a sweet lady with sassy inspirational rants, destruction and despair, a comedian who can speak ancient Latin, death, slaughter, death. The morning rises outside the window, he still snores happily in dreamland, and I get ready to pretend to be asleep when the alarm rings.

Our time returns

For Arheis, the stories were never mere legends, it just had to be real. All those arches and remains of magnificent palaces down in the depth of the seas were the proof of the days of glory, back in the times when the Titans lived and breathed in our world.

For many generations, no matter if human or merfolk, when the moon shone bright and big above the waves, the old would sing tales about the mighty Titans, weaving intricate stories upon stories full of valor, fantasy, and betrayal. It was known that some elders claimed to descent directly from the Oceanids of Old, and every now and then someone would whisper about the sacred giant stone hand that emerges from the water among the Isles of Aquarius to their usual audience of little ones, who would listen with wide open eyes and excited imaginations.

“It is no ordinary statue, oh no, it never was…”, the old one would say and then, lowering the voice a little more and leaning forward, as if sharing a naughty little secret, they would add “… it is the real hand of the last of the Titans, frozen in time forever until the magic returns to our land”.

Arheis knows that the time has come, that the portals opened in the Fairelands and that is as real as the rays of sunshine piercing through the waves. All sorts of magical creatures can be seen again on the Isles of Aquarius, there are unknown songs and new smells in the air, and even some old ruins and broken pathways seem to be under some form of bizarre magical repair. The Titans might return too and with them, the days of glory.

A forgotten song for Aruok

There was something different about the wind that day, a sweet whisper of rustled leaves, almost a song with familiar notes. Aruok could not remember it, it was less than a memory, like the elusive shadow of a dream lingering behind her eyes for just a heartbeat, before fading away. No, it was not the wind, it was a voice, a sweet choir of voices in a secret call, a summon, stirring her heart and filling her spirit with promise.

Aruok could not tell how long she had been away, exiled in silence and darkness, seasons came and went and the Fairelands with them, becoming a longing for that home that she had lost. But that was in the past. She knew that the portals were open, she could feel it like goosebumps on her skin, in the particular glow of her wings, in the song carried by the wind. And so Aruok took flight, floating through the waves of music, through the mystical portals, through the lands where she had loved life.

With each breath she could feel the very spirit of the Fairelands filling her with warmth, the sunny valley of Sipala was where she belonged, and while she swirled in the air with all the creatures who welcomed her, she promised never to leave again. Her voice joined the choir in the song of hope that had awakened her, calling on all the other lost souls to return.

The Fantasy Faire 2023 has begun!
