The air is rancid with death and rubble dust. It’s been many years since the last time human steps hurried along these roads, now broken and silent. There are no more voices bartering among the ruins of what was the market, no more pigeons pecking at bread crumbs outside of the empty shell that was a bakery, no more children chasing a dog or singing a nursery rhyme on their way from the shattered remains of a school. There are no more dogs chasing birds, no more birds, no more butterflies.

I want down a lifetime ago, and now that I arise, I am not sure what it is that emerged instead of me. My eyes see, yet they’re not entirely my eyes. I see the light but walk in shadows, I feel the summer wind but breathe only dark ice. I move along these friendly, familiar faces, and they’re all strangers. My voice learned to repeat empty pleasantries that put people at ease, while the other voice inside me hasn’t stopped screaming in terror since this creature with my face emerged from the depths where I was lost.
