I’ve heard your kind telling the most outlandish stories about the merfolk, stories filled with mystery and allure, danger and deceit. I enjoy listening to your old tales, and I wonder how much your ancestors knew… and how. Perhaps the bravest among you dove somewhat too deep one day while looking for pearls, and caught a glimpse of the sacred temples and towers that we conceal under the waves.

On some quiet nights, when your world is asleep and there’s no sound but the soft whisper of the sea foam caressing the shores, our divine songs ripple through the surface and can be heard, dancing with the wind, toying with the leaves of the trees, gently fading until all is silent again.

Into the Fairelands

“Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe“

We’ve waited with our eyes full of dreams and memories, we’ve counted the minutes and the seconds, and now it’s time: the portals are open once again and the magic from the Fairelands calls for us, the Fantasy Faire 2024 has begun.

The Faire means many different things for us. For some, it’s all about the fun, meeting fellow “geeks” while playing the ultimate cosplay with our avatars, the parties, the games, the shopping. For others, it’s a way to share our creativity, from the incredibly talented builders who create all these worlds for us to enjoy, the amazing photographers who document the beauty of the lands, the merchants who put effort and love into their creations year by year, to the performers and everyone else who give life to this wonderful dream to support the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world without cancer.

We are all here to Relay For Life. The Faire unites us in an effort to contribute to this fight, it unites us in our shared experiences, as we transform the struggles and the pain into beauty and joy. We relay with love, we relay with hope, we relay in the memory of the ones we’ve lost, and for the scars of the ones who survived.

When I relay, I think of the brother who lost his battle so many years ago, his youth taken away and our broken hearts. But I also relay in the name of the sister who survived and is still my dearest friend, and how grateful I am to know that we’re still there, giving each other light. I relay with my husband, who also survived a few years ago and is still the love of my life, my partner, lover, and accomplice, and we relay for so many others in so many other lives, whoever you are. We will never forget you.

The air is rancid with death and rubble dust. It’s been many years since the last time human steps hurried along these roads, now broken and silent. There are no more voices bartering among the ruins of what was the market, no more pigeons pecking at bread crumbs outside of the empty shell that was a bakery, no more children chasing a dog or singing a nursery rhyme on their way from the shattered remains of a school. There are no more dogs chasing birds, no more birds, no more butterflies.

Once a warrior

When long ago I saw her ride

She grew up under the shadow of the mountain range, hearing ancient stories about ancient heroes of the land. She had dreams of brave adventures while she learned to wield a sword, and years later she had dreams of bloody vengeance while she lingered in her cell. She’s known freedom and she’s known hell, and she will defend this land with her life.

A forgotten song for Aruok

There was something different about the wind that day, a sweet whisper of rustled leaves, almost a song with familiar notes. Aruok could not remember it, it was less than a memory, like the elusive shadow of a dream lingering behind her eyes for just a heartbeat, before fading away. No, it was not the wind, it was a voice, a sweet choir of voices in a secret call, a summon, stirring her heart and filling her spirit with promise.

Aruok could not tell how long she had been away, exiled in silence and darkness, seasons came and went and the Fairelands with them, becoming a longing for that home that she had lost. But that was in the past. She knew that the portals were open, she could feel it like goosebumps on her skin, in the particular glow of her wings, in the song carried by the wind. And so Aruok took flight, floating through the waves of music, through the mystical portals, through the lands where she had loved life.

With each breath she could feel the very spirit of the Fairelands filling her with warmth, the sunny valley of Sipala was where she belonged, and while she swirled in the air with all the creatures who welcomed her, she promised never to leave again. Her voice joined the choir in the song of hope that had awakened her, calling on all the other lost souls to return.
